What Is Happening With Diabetes Research

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, diabetes is a condition that affects your body’s ability to use blood sugar for energy. Diabetes can cause serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease.

There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, which often occurs in children or young adults, occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes, which often occurs in adults, occurs when the body does not use insulin properly.

You can help control your diabetes by eating healthy foods, staying at a healthy weight, and exercising regularly. You also may need to take diabetes medicine every day.

If you have diabetes, your body cannot make or properly use insulin. Insulin is necessary for your body to be able to use glucose (sugar) for energy. With type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin. With type 2 diabetes, the more common type, your body does not make or use insulin well. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in your blood.

High blood sugar can cause serious health problems. It can damage your eyes, kidneys, and nerves. High blood sugar can also cause heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
