Scientists at the University of Toronto and several other research centers throughout Canada, Denmark, and the United States have devised a new test for women who have had Gestational diabetes. The test was designed for predicting the likelihood of women who had been diagnosed with diabetes during their pregnancy, developing Type 2 diabetes after delivery. Their work was reported on in the medical journal Diabetes in June 2016.

Type 2 Diabetes – Does Vitamin D Benefit Blood Sugar Levels in Gestational Diabetes?

Scientists at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in Tabriz, Iran, found vitamin D supplementation in women diagnosed with Gestational diabetes or diabetes of pregnancy, lowered their blood sugar levels and helped with their blood sugar control. The journal Nutritional Research and Practice reported on this study. A total of 76 women with Gestational diabetes, between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, were divided into groups of thirty-eight. One group received vitamin D supplements, while the second group was given a placebo. Fasting blood sugar levels decreased 4.72 mg/dL (0.262 mmol/L) and their HbA1c fell by 0.18 percent.

Type 2 Diabetes – Maternal Weight Gain During Pregnancy Affects the Child’s Risk of Becoming Obese

Scientists at Harvard Medical School and several other research institutions in Boston, United States and Canada, found too much weight gain during the first three months of pregnancy resulted in excess weight gain in children. In July of 2016 the medical journal, Obesity reported on 979 mother and child pairs who took part in the study. The young children whose mother had gained excess amounts of weight during the first and second three months of their pregnancy, were heavy by mid-childhood. From this result, the researchers concluded there was a need to address excess weight gain early in the mother’s pregnancy to avoid excessive weight gain in their children’s early years.
